The Medtech Pit Crew: Why Professional Maintenance is Your Ticket to Independence

At Medtech Services, we’ve asked ourselves a simple question: "How would we want our own family member to be treated if they needed our help?"

For us, the answer is easy. We would want them to have equipment that is safe, reliable, and backed by a team that actually understands durable medical equipment. Your mobility equipment: whether it’s a walker, a motorized wheelchair, a travel scooter, a wheelchair-accessible van, or even a lift on the back of your vehicle: isn't just a piece of machinery. It is your ticket to freedom. It’s your way to get to the grocery store, visit grandkids at the park, or enjoy a stroll through the beautiful Truckee Meadows.

Like any high-performance vehicle, your mobility aids need their own kind of “pit crew" to keep it running at its best. That is where our expert service team comes in.

Don't Get Stuck in the Internet Run-Around Headache

We see it all the time. Someone finds a "great deal" on cheap mobility equipment from a faceless company online. It arrives in pieces in a box on their porch, and the moment something goes wrong, a battery won't charge, a controller starts flashing, a tire goes flat, or it arrives damaged out of the box, that website’s customer service department is nowhere to be found. They don't have a repair shop. They don't have local technicians. Instead, you are met with a 1-800 number and a lot of excuses. Now you are stuck with a device that is nothing but a giant paperweight, and chances are you are going to have to spend all that time and money AGAIN just to replace it.

Save yourself the headache, the time, and the money.

When you shop local with Medtech Services, you aren't just buying a product; you are gaining a partner. We believe in service after the sale. If your equipment needs a tune-up or a repair, you don't have to ship it across the country. You just bring it to the bright yellow building on Gentry Way, where our team is ready to get you back on the move.

Your At-Home Maintenance Checklist

Staying independent means being proactive. While our team is always here for the heavy lifting, there are steps you can take at home to keep your equipment in top shape!

Let’s take a look at a few ways you can help keep your equipment running smoothly day-to-day.

1. Battery Care is Critical

Your batteries are the heart of your machine. Keep them strong!

  • Charge daily: Don't wait until you're on "E." Charge your scooter or power chair after every day of use. If you are not using the device daily, be sure to maintain it at least once every week or so by turning it on and charging it. Just like a car battery, leaving the device to sit untouched will eventually cause the battery to die.

  • Use the right charger: Only use the recommended charger made for your device’s batteries. If you are unsure which charger is the right one, we encourage you to give us a call!

  • Use the right batteries: While there are many options for battery companies in the world, it is so critical to use a dependable manufacturer. We have access to the batteries needed for all the equipment we sell and care for, and the batteries are powerful, durable, and covered by warranty - plus we can install them for you, saving you more time and making sure everything runs nice and smooth.

2. Tire Inspections for a Smoother Ride

Worn tires can make your motor work harder and decrease your battery life.

  • Check the tread: Look for bald spots or cracks. If you notice that the tires are flat or smoother than they used to be, that is a good sign that it may be time to replace them!

  • Be aware of the terrain: Some kinds of terrain are handled better by various equipment, and the tires are no different! When purchasing your scooter or wheelchair, think of where you plan to use it in your day-to-day life, what kind of environment you encounter every day, and what it is you that you expect from your device. Sometimes a small and easy to transport scooter or chair is perfect, but other times you may need a larger and more rugged device that can handle more intensive use. Medtech’s team is here to help you narrow the choices down to find what works best for you!

3. Keep it Clean, Keep it Running

Dust, hair, and grit can get caught in the axles and moving parts.

  • Wipe it down: Use a damp cloth and mild detergent to keep the frame and seat clean.

  • Avoid the hose: Never spray your electric equipment with a hose! Water and electronics are a bad mix - this also means you want to be sure that you keep your equipment out of the weather: rain, snow, extreme temperatures, and even just sitting in the sun are all capable of causing damage to both the exterior and interior components of your device. You want it covered, and ideally in an indoor space like a garage for storage.

4. The Annual "Pit Stop"

Even if everything feels like it is running just fine, we strongly recommend at least an annual service check-up. Our technicians can spot hidden issues: like frayed wiring or motor brushes that are wearing down: before they leave you stranded. By keeping up on general maintenance, your device will continue to work for you for longer, making your investment well worth the while. This applies to all equipment, including lifts and ramps for vehicles!
